Echo directed by Lewis Arnold

 Echo: directed by Lewis Arnold

Echo follows the  somewhat true story of schoolgirl Caroline who we see at the beginning receiving a phone call delivering the tragic news that her dad has been in a motorcycle accident and is in hospital. Caroline is frantic and creates a scene in the middle of a busy street, attracting attention from strangers who subsequently attempt to help her. She explains the situation to them and appears upset and in need of help to get to he hospital, the man helping her puts her in a taxi and gives her money for it. We then see the taxi driving away and stopping slightly further on, to which we see Caroline leaving the taxi and pocketing the money. She makes her way home on the bus and she appears lonely and troubled, lighting up a cigarette in front of the family home. The mise-en-scene is quite raw throughout with blue tones and it appears quite bleak, with her looking in on her family from the outside. Caroline appears to have a troubled family life and is mainly blunt, rude and uncommunicative towards her younger brother and her mum. The next day, we see Caroline again in the middle of town, reinacting the same phone call she had yesterday, gaining attention from another stranger. Her brother approaches, confused asking Caroline what's going on, Caroline looks stressed rushing away with him, clearly due to the fact that her brother has broken her cover. The man realises that it's all a con in attempt to extort money and threatens to call the police. However her brother says to her, "How does he know about dad?", providing some truth in that their dad is unwell or dead. The scene then follows onto showing her little brother attempting to get his bike out of the garage, showing three bikes on one side, and another discarded on the other side of the garage, implying that it belongs to their dad that is presumed dead. Her brother rides off on his bike, with a puncture, and the audience is left unsure if that has any significance. The final scene shows Caroline, yet again in the middle of her local town creating the same scene as before, and the film ends, with her frantically.

How may this influence our work?
The short film Echo may influence our work as it gives us ideas on a short film we could make and the techniques used for example the bleak mise en scene and camera shots used could be used to help us make our own film if it were of a sad nature. Echo could also influence us to make a film based on a true story to make it more impactful and have a deeper meaning to captivate the audience.

  1. Good. What about the structure? Do you think you'd like your script to show repetition of a key idea or moment?
